How to get a TRN and a place on the voters' list.

Two things open most doors in Jamaica: a Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) and a place on the voters' list.

Getting a TRN from overseas

You must apply yourself; nobody can apply for you. Complete Form 1, Application for Taxpayer Registration (Individuals), or start the application with a login on the Tax Administration Jamaica website.

Send the signed application with a notarised copy of your passport or driver's licence showing your full name, date of birth, photograph and signature. The signature on the form must match the one on your ID. Tax Administration Jamaica's handout for the diaspora says a Jamaican consulate, embassy or high commission can also certify the copies.

Mail or courier it to: Taxpayer Registration Centre, Sir Donald Sangster Building, 2nd Floor, 116 East Street, Kingston, Jamaica. There is no fee, and the card is mailed to the address on your application.

Getting on the voters' list

Registration is free and is done in person at a constituency office in Jamaica, because your photograph and fingerprints are taken. You must be a Jamaican citizen aged 18 or over and resident in Jamaica.

After you apply, your address is visited, and registration is complete only when your residence has been verified. New voters' lists are published on 31 May and 30 November each year, and your Voter ID is issued after the list with your name on it is published.

You cannot register from abroad.
